He was informed by his father that he was the last of the RAWBONEs! His father sent him to England to learn English but having returned to France, his father hardly ever spoke with him in the language!

Translated from a French newspaper:

"The Arsenal gunner

Claude Rawbone is quite possibly one of the very first players to have crossed the channel to play in one of England’s first division teams, in the colours of Arsenal. Surprising…
Claude Rawbone’s story is simply a fairy story. Sent to England by his father to learn and to master Shakespeare’s language, during the week he worked for the Western Union Telegraph and played football at the weekend. It was here that he became a prolific goal scorer, a reputation which found its way to Arsenal’s chief scouts. It worked so well that one day he was surprised to receive a letter from the manager of one of the oldest and most prestigious British clubs.
“It was then that I discovered another world; the world of a professional”, remembered Claude. “In all, I played four times for the first team but it was the first match which left me with the bitter memory of inadvertently breaking the leg of another player.”
As a foreign resident and therefore having delayed until now, he decided at this time to do his military service. “At the time, if I had not done it, we would have been asked difficult questions. Also, at the time, one also worried what one's parents might say”. Assigned to the “service cinema”* in Evry, he learned his future career of photographer, a job which he would continue with the Courrier Picard newspaper where his father was already employed. It is also the time when Claude would meet his future wife and he decided to close the chapter on his dazzling but short-lived career as a high level footballer. This is a decision he never regretted as from behind the lens, he would be able to continue taking pleasure from the football pitches before him."
